Yeah, not a good week. Take one part STOMACH FLU FROM HELL and add in four parts out of town for the weekend, and you get not so much productivity.
In other news, have an idea for a second book that is just SCREAMING at me. Must get it to shut up so I can finish this one. |

| To the Writers on my Flist |
[May. 29th, 2008|02:47 pm] |
...or anyone else who has some good advice.
I'm trying really hard to overcome my writer's block. The creative writing class has helped me so much--it really got my brain thinking creatively again. It's given me the jump start I needed, and I've been working on some smaller projects.
Now I'm working on a larger project, and the one thing I've decided is that, come hell or highwater, I'm going to finish it. I've given myself a deadline, and a daily word count, and all that fun stuff, and I've been trying to write and write even when what's coming doesn't seem like it's any good.
Now, here's my question. How do you get your inner critic to shut up? Or at least quiet down? Mine is definitely doing it's job of working against me--the more I write (especially when I'm trying to write through a particular hard scene), it seems the louder that damn demon gets. It's annoying. I know the inner critic never really goes away, but it's starting to impede my work. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, does anyone have any suggestions for online tools/communities that might be helpful to a beginning novelist? I was looking at this, but I'm honestly not sure how useful it would be. Just seems like glorified index cards. And I also don't want to get too bogged down with communities and discussion boards that will eventually end up intimidating and scaring me, and forget about writing. BUT I do want to try to become the best writer I can be.
Any thoughts?

| Creative Writing, The Journey Continues |
[May. 13th, 2008|11:12 am] |
Thanks to pharis, sabledrake, and thunderemerald for their feedback on my first assignment. Much appreciated. My second assignment is below the cut. Here's the deal: in our second class, the teacher had us do a free-writing exercise. She gave a prompt and we had to write, write, write without picking up our pen until she said stop. The prompt was "I remember..." and we had to write about different memories from one period in our lives. I chose the vague timeframe of age 6-8. Then for the take-home assignment, we could pick one memory from the exercise, one that involved at least two people, and elaborate on it (up to a paragraph or so). THEN, we had to write the same memory from three POVs: first, second, and third (omniscient).
My memory is below. The class did give me some concrit this time, which was such a relief.

Am currently taking a creative writing class at the local writing center. It's an introduction level class that Hubby signed me up for in hopes that it will help the writer's block some.
First assignment is behind the cut, in case you'd like to read it. It's a character study and many thanks to thunderemerald for helping me to figure out what that means. Am annoyed that the class didn't have anything bad to say about my piece. I need some constructive criticism!

Okay, I think my stupidity is showing, but you all seem like the type that won't mock me (too badly). Here's the situation:
As a first anniversary gift, Hubby signed me up for a creative writing class as the local writing center, in the hopes that it will help me overcome this nasty writer's block. Had the first class this past Monday and it was AWESOME (Hubby was concerned that it might be a little too "introduction" level for me, but I think it's just what I need right now). I can't wait until the next class and I'm already making plans to take the center's "Introduction to the Novel" class. However, I'm having trouble with our first assignment.
Write a 1-2page, two character, character study, in third person.
Okay...what's a character study? I get the whole "third person" part, but I have no idea what a character study is. I've done character outlines before, but not a "study."
Does anyone have any help, websites, or examples?
Thanks.

[Apr. 30th, 2008|03:05 pm] |
Gakked from yi_sen :
1. Last cigarette? I quit August of 2003, so it's been almost five years (wow!) But I did smoke one at my bachelorette party, one during what I refer the as the Giant Work Crisis of 2008, and about five during the office Christmas party.
2. Last beverage? Coke
3. Last phone call? I just talked to one of my co-workers. Other than that, the hubby.
4. Last text message? My husband calling me a sexy writer. :-D
5. Last CD played? I recently made myself of mixed CD, but in general I just download piecemeal from iTunes.
6. Last BUBBLE bath? Since I discovered the glory of LUSH, they are much more frequent. I think it's been about two weeks since my last one. Must remedy.
7. Last time you cried? About five seconds ago. I am a ridiculous weeper.
8. Last meal? A frozen lunch and an apple. And a Snickers Ice Cream bar. |

Like most offices, mine doesn't stock premium coffee. Or even sub-premium. But I love/need my coffee and make due.
This morning, I took a sip and thought to myself, "Mmmm, coffee's good this morning." And then realized with horror what I was thinking.
I fear I may have lost my ability to discern good coffee from bad. ::sad face:: |
